Witness

Screen Shot 2019-08-31 at 11.jpg

In this photo, the witnessing of postcolonial traumas and genocide of the motherland is seen through a figure filled with photos of the Sri Lankan civil war. The figure's eyes are the only visible aspect of them to show that as a witness, individuals who escape from the motherland will be unable to remember their lives there as anything but traumatic.

A fragment of the Sri Lankan border runs through the photo to illustrate how diasporic individuals will remain caught in the tragedies of the ancestral home no matter how far they have gone or how much time has passed.

*The photos of the Sri Lankan civil war are screenshots from videos taken by Sri Lankan journalist Suren Karthikesu. Arrthy was given access to these photos in 2016 with permission to creatively alter them as she saw fit.
