Adulthood

IMG_4042 copy.jpg

This photo illustrates the fragmentation between acceptance into adulthood in the homeland and in the western world.

Tamil traditions celebrate the transition of a girl becoming a woman through her first period with a ceremony, in which she wears her first saree. In Western traditions, ascension into womanhood is usually celebrated on an individual's 18th birthday. These contrasting understandings of adulthood lead to a fragmentation of the diaspora.

Through the fragmentation of the past and present, emerges a liminal space in which diasporic individuals are able to celebrate adulthood through both cultures. This liminal boundary is seen through the red line that is apart of the Sri Lankan border.
